Update Sept 9, 2005 FEMA has assigned 3 representatives to Beauregard Parish. They are working to setup housing and other resources here. They are not taking 'paper' applications for FEMA aid. Everyone who has been evacuated or has loses related to Katrina should file a FEMA application either on-line or by telephone as soon as possible. These are the only ways that FEMA is accepting applications. If you need access to a telephone, the Church of the Nazarine at 812 Shirley St. and Bryan in DeRidder has a bank of phones available. If you need access to a computer, come to any branch of the Library or visit the mobile library parked at the Dry Creek Baptist Camp shelter.
Regarding debit cards, the FEMA representative said that the first step was to register with FEMA. Be careful to keep the number that FEMA assigns. As benefits are available, they will be distributed in the quickest way possible to everyone who qualifies and has registered with FEMA. If you are located in Louisiana, it is more likely that you will receive your benefits by direct deposit or as a check. The check or the notice that the money has been deposited will be mailed to whatever address you give to FEMA as part of the registration process. If you move from that address be very sure to leave a forwarding address so FEMA can contact you.
At this point, no one seems to know when or even if you will be able to fill out a form on paper so the word is ... REGISTER NOW BY PHONE OR ONLINE!
At this time, FEMA has not scheduled a visit from a FEMA representative to work with individuals in our parish. We hope to hear soon that one has been scheduled so check back often.
In the meantime, FEMA suggests that anyone wanting assistance complete an application as soon as possible. This can be done by calling 1-800-621-3362 or logging on to their wedsite at www.fema.gov. There is information on that website to guide you in completing the form.
The phones at FEMA are very busy so be ready to try often.
The FEMA application can be completed on the Library's patron access computers at the main branch in DeRidder, in the rural branches and on the Mobile Electronic Library which is parked at the Dry Creek Baptist Camp shelter. FEMA requires that you use Internet Explorer to complete the form. Library staff have made sure that it is available on all Library patron access computers.
A printed copy of the FEMA instructions is available at the main library as well as on line at the FEMA site.
If you need to print as you complete the form, the Library is waiving the cost of printing and copying for matters related to the Katrina recovery effort.
