LIBRARY-BASED FAMILY LITERACY

Empowering people through libraries

Viburnum/American Library Association Rural Family Literacy Project

When we think of literacy the image of urban centers and one to one tutoring come to mind. The work for a literate America has no specific region or population. Over 90 million Americans are in the two lowest levels of literacy that means that rural areas need programs just as urban areas do.

Knowing how to read well is essential in a society that is information and technology based. Adults who do not understand the technologies of the workplace (training manuals, etc.), who cannot read a story to their children or enjoy a good book, keep the cycle of illiteracy spiraling. Their potential for leading a productive and satisfying life is limited.

Children of parents who don't read are less likely to become readers. That's why the Viburnum/ALA Rural Family Literacy Project has focused on library-based family literacy programs.

Library-based family literacy programs bring together parents and children to share a powerful learning experience. The library is a natural environment to help families grow strong and learn. The library is where the books are and it is a safe place, a welcoming harbor for families.

Eleven libraries in Louisiana have received grants through the Viburnum/ALA Rural Family Literacy Project. The third phase of this project expands its scope to libraries in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico as well as Louisiana.
