BPL Support

Section 1 - E-Mail Service

1. Are you having a problem reading or sending E-Mail? Does your E-Mail address end in beau.org or beau.lib.la.us? We do not provide support for E-Mail addresses other than those we issue. For questions regarding other E-Mail services, contact your E-Mail provider.
For our dial-up service, see Section 2 Go to BPL WebMail and carefully enter your username and password. Are you able to login?
  1. Make sure your CAPS LOCK is off.
  2. Look carefully at the user name and password to be sure you are typing each character correctly.
  3. If you still cannot login, take your username and password along with picture ID to a library branch for password assistance.
For our wireless service, see Section 3 Are you new to WebMail and wondering what to do next?

For general help in using WebMail, click the "Help" link on the WebMail page and then click the "Table of Contents" Link.

To learn how to use EMail, take the GCF EMail tutorial at GCF Email Basics. GCF tutorials are free but you will need to register.

For our filtering or security, see Section 4

For on-line access to your Library account, see Section 5
Do you have too much mail in your INBOX? Move messages you want to keep out of the INBOX and into some other folder. Use the 'help' link on the WebMail page for assistance in setting up and using folders. If you have a lot of junk messages, here is how to delete them quickly.
  1. Click "show all" to get as many emails on the web page as possible. It may take awhile but wait for them all to come in before you continue. If you are on a modem line and it is taking 'forever' to load the messages, you may want to come to a library branch to clear the box.
  2. Click "Select all" to put a check mark in each box.
  3. Look through the messages and remove the check mark from any messages you want to keep.
  4. In the 'Move selected to:' drop box, select 'Trash' and click 'Move'
  5. When you are finished with the messages you have moved to Trash, empty the Trash by clicking the word '(purge)' next to the Trash folder.
If you get a message about being out of memory, do not use 'show all'. Instead, use Options, Display Preferences to set the 'Number of Messages to Index' to 300. You will need to repeat the steps above for each 300 message set.
For using on-line resources such as encyclopedias and E-Books, see Section 6 At this point, we have established that you able to send and receive E-Mail in WebMail. Are you wanting to use some other program to send and receive E-Mail using pop3 or imap service? Congratulations, you can read and send E-Mail in WebMail. If you have additional questions, please begin at Section 1 and follow the flowchart to find the answer.
For using computers in the Library labs (including browsers), see Section 7 Here is the basic information for pop3 or imap setup:
  • The BPL mail server allows pop3 and imap connections. If you are using dialup, you will probably use pop3.
  • You may be asked for a server name. Regardless of the wording (POP3, SMTP, etc.), the correct name for the mail server (both incoming and outgoing) is mail.beau.org.
  • The domain suffix (if you should be asked) is beau.org
  • Your email address is your username followed by the at sign and then beau.org. For example: your_username@beau.org
Do you need additional help?
You are setup to receive and send email through the BPL system. If you should have problems with your pop3 or imap setup or if you want to pick up your email when you are away from the computer you ordinarily use, WebMail will still be available to you.
Is your question related to filtering the E-Mail you receive?

The Library's mailserver marks some messages by adding [SPAM] to the subject of the E-Mail. Most E-Mail programs will allow you to automatically send this mail to the Trash or to some other folder so that it will not appear in your INBOX.

Set the options or preferences in your E-Mail program so that pictures are not automatically displayed and programs or executables do not run automatically.

If you access the Internet on your laptop or a personal PC (via dial-up or wireless) you may want to install an Internet filter on your PC. Among the sites which offer and/or review these products are:

Most E-Mail programs allow you to set up additional filters. For filtering options see the on-line help or support for the E-Mail program you are using.

Is your question related to using Mozilla's Thunderbird mail? Many of our users send and receive email using Mozilla's Thunderbird. Help is available at http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/faq
Is your question related to using Seamonkey's mail? Many of our users send and receive email using Seamonkey. Help is available at http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey
Is your question related to using Outlook Express? For security reasons, we request that you not use Outlook Express to send E-Mail through our system. If you are trying to use Outlook Express, assistance is available at http://support.microsoft.com
Is your question related to using some other E-Mail program? E-Mail programs which send and receive using pop3 or imap protocol should work. For support, use the web pages for the product you have selected.
Additional information regarding E-Mail is available:
  • in the GCF EMail tutorial at GCF Email Basics. GCF tutorials are free but you will need to register.
  • on the Internet - use a search engine such as Google to locate the information you need.
  • in print or video format. The Library's Reader Services Department can help you locate these materials.

Section 2 - Dial Up Service

Do you have a question about connecting to the Library by modem (dialup)? NEW INSTALL? Do you need a username and password? Bring your library card and picture ID to any branch of the Library. If you do not have a library card, bring verification of your address so that you can apply for a card. While you are at the Library, ask for an Installation CD and instructions for your operating system.
For other questions:
Begin at Section 1
NEW INSTALL? Are you trying to setup a dialup account without using the Library's CD? This is the information you will need to setup a dialup account without using the Library's CD:
  • If DeRidder telephone numbers are not long distance for you, set your computer to dial 462-9420. Please note that DeRidder numbers are now local for our patrons in the Merryville area. The old Merryville numbers are being phased out. If you are in the Merryville area, set your computer to dial 462-9420.
  • If you live in the South Beauregard area and DeRidder numbers are long distance for you, set your computer to dial 725-3768 or 725-4484.
  • It is best to allow your computer to pick up DNS service automatically. If this does not work, our primary DNS server is 199.80.85.1. Secondary DNS server is 209.209.193.98
  • Mail can be picked up by pop3 or imap. For additional information, see the E-Mail section of these instructions.
  • If you need additional help with your setup, pick up a copy of the Library's CD and Instructions at any branch of the Beauregard Parish Library. Additional information on setting up your account is available at:
  • Internet Setup Instructions
  • Dialup FAQ
NEW INSTALL? Are you having problems getting the Library's CD to work? Occasionally a damaged or blank CD will cause problems.
  • Try accessing another software CD to be sure your CD hardware and software is working correctly.
  • If other software CDs do not load correctly, review the install instructions for the CD reader and contact your vendor or a computer repair technician. The Library cannot test or repair your computer.
  • If other software CDs load correctly, contact the Library to ask for a replacement CD.
  • NEW INSTALL? Are you wondering what you need to use the Library's DialUp services? Here are the requirements for using the Library's dialup Internet connection.
    1. Most modern computers are Internet ready. This means that they have the hardware and software to connect to and browse the Internet. Windows, Linux and MAC computers can use the dialup services.
    2. Dialup connections require a phone line with dial tone. The phone line connects to the computer through a modem. Software to operate the modem must be installed in your computer.
    3. You will need a username and password assigned by the Beauregard Parish Library. Visit any branch of the Library to apply for an account.
    4. To avoid long distance charges, you need to be in a telephone area which allows you to dial one of the Library's access numbers as a local call. The numbers are: 462-9420, 725-3768 and 725-4484.
NEW INSTALL? Are you wondering about our rules and charges?
  • The Library does not charge for Internet access.
  • Users on the dialup lines are limited to 2 hours per day.
  • Adults are responsible for monitoring the Internet use of children in their care. Filtering is not foolproof and cannot be relied upon to keep children safe on the Internet.
  • All users are required to comply with laws related to Internet use.
  • Are you unable to get through and have an expired Library card or Library fines or fees? To access Library dial-up or Email services, you must have a valid BPL or LSW library card. Contact Library registration to see what you need to do to reactiviate your account. Payment plans are available.
Are you unable to get through after being on line earlier in the week? The most common reason for losing access to the Internet is that the account has been used for the maximum allowable hours in the current week. If this is the case, your account will be available again when the system resets user time on Sunday. Library employees cannot reset the account prior to that time. You can, however, use your account in the Library's labs.
Do you prefer more restrictive filtering than the library provides?

If you would like more restrictive filters, these sites list and or review parental filters.

If you need additional assistance with your dialup connection:
    • Check with your vendor. You may have support or a warranty which will help solve your problem.
    • Try the BPL Dialup and Modem FAQs
    • And the Internet Setup Instructions
    • The Library's Reader Services Department can help you locate the books and other resources on computer dialup connections.
    • Consult a computer repair technician.

    Section 3 - Wireless Service

Do you need information regarding the Library's wireless service? The Library offers 24/7 wireless access inside and in outdoor locations close to all library branches. If you have a802.11b or 802.11g wireless laptop, you should be able to connect anytime you are close to a library branch. Have you tried connecting? After following the setup instructions that came with your laptop and/or wireless card, visit a branch of the Beauregard Parish Library and try to connect.
    For other questions:
    Begin at Section 1
Were you able to reach the Internet? Great! You should be able to connect anytime you are in or close to a Beauregard Parish Library branch. For branch locations, visit the Library's website at http://library.beau.org
Are you being asked for an ESSID? Our Wireless broadcasts the ESSID (Extended Service Set Identifier) so in most cases, it will be picked up automatically and listed as an available network. If the laptop does not pick it up, we use BPL- BranchName where BranchName is the name of the branch.

    For example, DeRidder is BPL-DeRidder
Are you able to use other wireless Internet services from this laptop? It is very rare that a laptop with a properly configured wireless connection will be unable to connect through the Library's wireless service. Please try connecting again (in case the service was down) and, if you are still unable to connect, please an email with details about your laptop, wireless card, software, any error messages you received, etc, to help@beau.org.
Review the instructions which came with your laptop and/or wireless card. If you are unsure if the laptop is able to make a wireless connection, contact your vendor or a computer repair technician.

Section 4 - Filtering and Security

Do you have a question about the Library's filtering or security? Are you wondering why the Library filters Internet Access? We are subject to various government rules and regulations. Internet access through the Library must be filtered to meet the requirements of the CIPA and other laws.
    For other questions:
    Begin at Section 1
Do you have a question about E-Mail filters?
SpamAssassin identifies some junk mail and adds the notation '[SPAM]' to the subject. Most mail programs allow you to set up filters to provide additional controls. For more information, check the 'help' for the E-Mail program you are using.
Do you think the Library's filters block too many web sites? The Library does not make the decision as to which sites are blocked. Our purpose is to provide basic Internet access so that our patrons can use the on-line encyclopedias and other reference and research materials we provide. While we are not designed to be anyone's primary Internet service provider, many people find that our services meet all of their on-line needs. Others chose a commercial ISP but continue to use the Library for electronic resources. Users who are frustrated by the filtering, may prefer the second option.
Do you think the Library's filters do not block enough web sites or E-Mail? If you are dialing in from your home computer or using a laptop on the Library's wireless service, you can add one of the many programs which provide web site and/or E-Mail filtering. While the Library cannot recommend one program over the other, the Reader Services Department can assist you in locating information on the available programs.
Are you wondering if the Library's filtering system will guarantee your child's safety on the Interent? No filtering system is foolproof. If you are concerned about keeping a child in your care safe on the Internet, you must monitor their Internet use. Filtering alone cannot be relied on to provide adequate protection.
Are you worried about ad-ware, spy-ware, viruses and other mal-ware? If you use E-Mail or access the Internet, you should consider the risks and take adequate precautions. Some things you can do to protect your system:
    1. MS Windows based operating systems are especially vulnerable. Take care to keep up with all the security updates recommended for your system. Follow the recommended security guidelines for your system.
    2. Because Windows systems can give access to your files without your knowledge, we strongly advise against using Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. Install and, whenever possible, use another browser and E-Mail reader.
    3. Because the mail remains on the Library's mail server, using the Library's WebMail to read E-Mail is safer than reading it on your computer.
    4. Avoid downloading programs or other files from unfamiliar web sites or E-Mails unless you are very sure that they come from a secure, uninfested source.
    5. Install and regularly update and use software to protect your computer from viruses, ads and other mal-ware. Make sure the software you use is from a reliable source.
    6. Know how to protect your system from the most recent threats. Additional information is available at Symantec Security Response and other similar sites.
    7. Consider using a MAC or Linux based system for Internet access. Dual booting PCs and laptops which allow you to use Windows for running programs and Linux for Internet access are available.
Do you think your computer might be infected? Immediately use an updated security program to clean your computer. It may be necessary to reload your operating system. Additional information is available at Symantec Security Response and other similar sites. If you need additional assistance, contact a computer repair technician. The Library cannot assist you in cleaning or repairing your computer.
Additional information about filtering and security is available on the Internet and from the many books on the subject. The Library's Reader Services Department can help you locate the books. To locate information on the Internet, use a search engine such as Google. Specific information on the Library's filtering is available on our Internet Filtering page.

Wondering what computer services the Library supports? Our purpose is to provide basic Internet access so that our patrons can use the on-line encyclopedias and other reference and research materials we provide. We provide direct support for the following essential services:
  • email through our system
  • access to the on-line databases (On-Line Research)
  • basic Internet research
If you have problems using a directly supported service, ask Library staff for assistance. Patrons who are not in a Library branch may request assistance by sending an email to help@beau.org or by calling the library and selecting extension 64.

For more information on supported and unsupported services, visit: http://library.beau.org/help/wesupport.html
  • Wondering what else you can do on the Library's computers? Unlike most agencies which allow public Internet access, we do not restrict the use of our equipment to the supported services. A good example of this is chat. Even though we don't support chat, we allow people to chat from our computers as long as they can do it without our assistance and their use does not interfere with our essential services. However, we do not guarantee that chat will work because it is not a supported service. Frequently used unsupported services include:
    • Chat
    • Word Processing & other office applications (use Open Office)
    • Sending and receiving E-Mail through other services such as Hotmail or Yahoo Mail.
    • Opening documents or graphics sent by email, downloaded from the Internet or brought on portable media such as CDs.
    • Viewing or editing graphics (use GIMP for editing).
    • Using USB storage devices.
    • Copying information to CDs.
    • Playing games or running other programs.
    • Listening to music.
    • Accessing websites which require software in addition to the browser, i.e. Flash.
    • Anything else which is not on the list of essential services.
For more information on supported and unsupported services, see: http://library.beau.org/help/wesupport.html"
Have a question about an unsupported resource? While library staff cannot provide direct support for these resources, we are able to direct you to a variety of self-help materials. These include:
    • Most computer and Internet resources include a help section. In many cases, this includes tutorials designed to teach new users the basics of using the resource.
    • The Library partners with GCF Global Learning to provide on line tutorials and classes. Tutorials include computer and Internet basics, Email, Open Office and many MS Windows programs.
    • An extensive collection of books and other resources is available for checkout. Search for materials in the OPAC or ask a library staff member for assistance in locating the library materials you need.
    • For more information on supported and unsupported services, see: http://library.beau.org/help/wesupport.html
Do you have a question about printing? Fees
    • You may print up to 10 pages per day from the BPL LA Library Connection Databases or from the library website (pages from
    • Warning: If you attempt to print and it does not work, please request immediate help from library staff. If you try to send multiple copies, you may be charged for each copy.
Support Printing is directly supported if what you are trying to print is from one of the BPL LA Library Connection Databases or from one of our other directly supported services, i.e. E-Mail from the Library's WebMail. Library staff will:
    • clear paperjams and assist with other printer maintenance problems.
    • assist you in printing related to a directly supported service.
    • maintain a self-help printing page where you may find assistance for other printing problems.
Do you need headphones? Headphones can be checked out on a valid library card at the lab desk. The Library's headphones are ONLY for use in the library building. If you prefer, you can bring your own.
Do you have a question about browsers? If you do not see a browser icon on your desktop, you can select it from the Applications menu in the Internet area.
Are you trying to use a music CD? Music CD's are not supported. If you think you can make it work, give it a try.
Are you trying to use a data CD (one that has been used to store documents or programs)? All public access workstations are equipped with CD drives. The CD icon should come up on the desktop when you insert a CD.
Do you have a question about filtering? Because our Internet access is patrially supported by federal funding, the library is required to filter according to CIPA standards. We do not determine which sites are denied. At this time, our filtering system is not complete. We meet the CIPA requirements but we plan to add some options for different filtering levels in the near future. For additional information about our filters, see Library Internet Filtering
Do you have a question about Word Processing, Presentations or Spreadsheets?

Open Office is available on BPL computers. If the icon is not on your desktop, select 'Office' from the 'Applications' (foot) menu. A free on-line tutorial on Open Office is available at: GCF Global Learning.

Open Office can handle many (but not all) documents and spreadsheets saved in Microsoft Office format. If you have a file which will not open, take it back to the computer where it was saved and save it in rich text (RTF) format. Most programs will save to and open files in RTF format.
