Setting up your Internet Account with Windows XP

You should have the following items before beginning:

  1. A computer with Windows XP, in good working order.
  2. A modem, connected to a working telephone jack, properly installed in your system and configured in Windows.
  3. The paperwork that was supplied when you signed up with the Library, including your username and password.
  4. You may require your Windows CD-ROM. (if your system shipped with one)

The screen shots below were prepared from a patron's computer which was running Windows XP. Your screens may vary somewhat due to different versions of Windows, additional software appearing in your menus, etc.

Step I

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Click Communications
  5. Click New Connection Wizard
Step II

  1. This is just a welcome screen. There is nothing for you to do here...
  2. Click Next >
Step III

  1. The first option should already be checked.
  2. Click Next >
Step IV

  1. Click on "Set up my connection manually."
  2. Click Next >

Step V

  1. "Connect using a dial-up modem" should already be checked.
  2. Click Next >
Step VI

  1. Name the connection. If you have more than one (Longville and DeRidder) you might want to number them. (This document only includes one, adding the second is just a matter of running through these instructions a second time and choosing a different name in this step and a different phone # in the next.
  2. Click Next >
Step VII

  1. Enter the Library's Phone number
    • DeRidder and most of the parish: 462-9420
    • Longville/Ragley: 725-3768 or 725-4484
  2. Click Next >

If there is more than one phone number listed for your area, pick one at random. You can add a seperate dialup networking icon for the other number later.

Step VIII

  1. Enter the 5-8 character username you selected when you filled out the form at the library into the "User name:" box
  2. Enter the password we assigned you into the "Password:" box.
  3. Enter your password a second time in the "Confirm Password:" box.
  4. Be sure that both the username and password are entered correctly, including capitalization.
  5. Check all three of the option boxes.
  6. Click Next >

If multiple people use the same computer and have multiple Internet accounts, uncheck the box marked "Use this account name and password when anyone connects from this computer". For example, if you have an unfiltered account for yourself and you want your children to use their own accounts which go through our X-Stop proxy you would uncheck the box and later create their accounts while logged into Windows as them.

Step IX

  1. Congratulations, your Internet Connection is now setup.
  2. Click Finish

If you checked out a copy of our CD-ROM, insert it now and proceed to the seperate set of step by step instructions for it.
