Installing the Library CD

You should have the following items before beginning:
  1. An account with the Library and the paperwork we supplied, including your username and password.
  2. A PC running one of the following versions of Microsoft Windows™:
    1. Windows XP (Original, SP1 or SP2)
    2. Windows ME
    3. Windows 98 Second Edition
    4. Windows 98
  3. A copy of our CD-ROM
  4. Instructions for the Internet Setup Wizard, specific to your version of Windows. You must complete those instructions successfully before beginning with these.
Step I - Connect to the Internet

  1. Launch the dialer to connect to the library. The figure on the right illustrates the icon on the desktop you created while setting up Windows XP. Other versions vary, you may need to look in My Computer/Dial-Up Networking to find it (You might want to drag it to the Desktop for future use.)

  2. Click on Dial. If successful the dialog will disappear and a small icon will appear in the system tray. Depending on your version of Windows you may have to supply your password here.

Step II - Insert the CD and begin installing Mozilla

  1. Insert your copy of the Library CD. After a moment you should get a new window similar to the one on the left, showing the contents of the CD. (You might first have to tell Windows you want to see the files.)
If you have disabled auto-run (A wise decision, which can help protect you from all manner of malware) nothing will happen when you insert the CD. As someone who knows enough to alter the default settings you should also know how to open My Computer and double-click the CD to view it's contents.
  2. Double click on mozilla. This should launch the install program for Mozilla.
  3. First is a welcome panel, just click Next. (Below left)
  4. Then comes the EULA, click Accept or the install will exit. (Below middle)
  5. Next is a panel asking which components to install. We recommend taking the default install so just click Next. If you decide to customize, you must install the browser and mail components. (below right)

Step III - Finish installing Mozilla

  1. Next is a panel asking whether you want Quick Launch enabled. If your PC has a decent specs we recommend turning it on, but do it after you have finished here since it would complicate the later steps. Click Next. (Left top photo)

  2. Now you should see a panel (Lower left) listing the components about to installed. You are being given a final chance to change anything or cancel. Everything should be right so click Install.

  3. Wait a bit while the install proceeds. In a few moments it should complete successfully and launch Mozilla. Assuming your dialer successfully connected you to the Internet in Step I, Mozilla will appear and display it's homepage at http://www.mozilla.org. This page is on the Internet and may differ from what is pictured below in the background of the next step.. If instead you receive an error message, stop and ask for assistance because the next steps will fail if you are not connecting to the Internet properly.

Step IV - Make Mozilla your default browser

  1. This dialog is asking whether Mozilla should be your 'default' Web Browser. Picking Yes here will allow Mozilla to be the program responsible for displaying most Internet content instead of Internet Explorer. Since Internet Explorer (along with its usual partner in crime, Outlook Express) is the root cause of most of our users who have become infested with malware, we recommend avoiding it. Some sites refuse to load unless they detect your browser as IE, so you probably shouldn't delete the icon from your desktop.

  2. Congratulations, You are now connected to the Internet. Now all that remains is to load up some customizations and setup your email account. To do this requires you to close Mozilla. Click the small X in the upper right hand corner of it's window. If Windows offers to disconnect you from the Internet when you do this, say no as you need to remain online.

Step V - Locate and start Mozpatch

  1. The window showing the contents of the CD should still be on your screen. If it isn't still there, get it back. The fastest way is to just eject and reinsert the CD. (see photo in Step II)

  2. Double click on the "mozptch" folder. You should see something similar to the photo to the left.

  3. Double click on the icon to the left of mozptch

Step VI - Customize Mozilla

  1. Enter your username and click OK.

  2. Enter your real name as you wish it to appear on outgoing email. Click OK.

  3. Next is a confirmation screen. Just Click OK and ignore the German text that appears on these next few screens. It works, however it has yet to be completely translated from its original language.
Step VII - Completing the Installation

  1. Just click on Yes when you see the warning pictured at left.

  2. Finally, click on OK to complete the install.

Step VIII - Wrapping up

  1. You are now fully setup for Internet Access. You should have an icon on your desktop to launch Mozilla. Double click it and you should get our homepage at http://library.beau.org.

  2. To access your email accont, either pick Window / Mail & Newsgroups or click the envelope at the lower left of the window. The first time you open it you will be asked for your password and you will receive the warning pictured at the right. Check the option to "Accept this certificate permanently" and click OK. You will get it again when you first try to send an email.
So long as you are directly dialed into the Library, both are perfectly safe despite the warnings. However, should a similar warning appear in the future it should be a cause for worry. Examine our homepage to see if we have recently changed our keys.
