Setting up your Internet Account with Windows ME

You should have the following items before beginning:

  1. A computer with Windows ME, in good working order.
  2. A modem, connected to a working telephone jack, properly installed in your system and configured in Windows.

The screen shots below were prepared from a computer that was made available to us long enough to capture these photos. Your screens may vary somewhat due to slightly different versions of Windows, additional software appearing in your menus, etc.

Step I

  1. Click on My Computer
  2. Click on Dial Up Networking (a text link along the left)
Step II

  1. Double Click on "Make New Connection."
Step III

  1. Enter "Library" in the name box. (Or anything you will recognize.)
  2. Click Next >

Unless you happen to own a Toshiba computer, you will see something else in the Device field. If a modem does not appear here, this is a matter to take up with your hardware vendor. Installing and configuring new hardware is outside the scope of this document.

Step IV

  1. Enter the Library's Phone number
    • DeRidder and most of the parish: 462-9420
    • Longville/Ragley: 725-3768 or 725-4484
  2. Click Next >

If there is more than one phone number listed for your area, pick one at random. You can add a seperate dialup networking icon for the other number later.

If your computer doesn't get the area code right, try looking in the control panel under Modems. Lacking access to a Windows ME based PC we can't offer any more specific advice.

Step V

  1. Click Finish
You are done here. Continue with installation of Netscape. In Step IX the username and password will be blank because Windows ME did not ask you for that information. Just fill in the blanks at that time and everything will work correctly.
