Before trying to set up the Internet connection, make sure:
Your modem is properly installed and connected to your computer and
to a working telephone line.
You have a username and password which has been issued to you by the
Beauregard Parish Library.
Here's how to setup the connection:
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Click the Network and Internet icon.
Click the Network and Sharing Center icon.
Click Set up a connection or network
A new window will pop up asking you to choose the connection option.
Click Set up a dial-up connection then click Next
Enter the telephone number for the dialup you plan to use.
Most of Beauregard Parish can call this number toll free: 462-9420.
If you can dial that as a local number, enter it in the Dial-up phone number
area.
If that number is long distance from your location, you may
be able to use: 725-4484 or 725-3768 toll free.
Warning: It is your responsibility to ensure that the telephone number you
enter is toll free from your calling area. If you enter a long distance
number with the area code, your computer will dial that number and
the phone company will charge you for long distance calls.
Enter the username and password the library assigned to you. Be very
careful to enter them exactly as they were assigned. Most problems
with login are due to an incorrect username or password.
In the Connection name box enter a name for this connection.
You can enter Library or whatever you would like to call it.
Click connect and a window will show that the connection is being dialed.
When you see a window similar to this, you are connected to the
Internet through the library.
Notice that the window tells you how to connect next time:
Click the Start button.
Click Connect to
Click on the connection you just created (if you named the
connection Library, it will show with that name)
After your computer connects to the Library's server, your
browser may come up automatically. If it does not, click on the icon
for the browser (probably Internet Explorer) to bring it up.
Internet Explorer (IE) is the browser which comes with VISTA.
We strongly recommend that you go to
www.mozilla.com to download the
free Firefox browser and use it instead of IE whenever possible.
This will help you bypass many of the virus and other malware problems
which are designed to bypass IE security.
Your username and password allow you to use the Library's
e-mail service. To send or receive e-mail:
If you need additional assistance, click the blue
Help link near the top of the Webmail page.
Here is the email address that you can give to anyone you want
to be able to email you:
username@beau.org
^
enter your user name instead of 'username'
example: if my username is bookworm,
my email address will be:
bookworm@beau.org
If you already have email with through another email server, you are
welcome to try using that service while dialed up to the Library. If you
have problems, you may need to work with your email provider rather
than library staff to solve them.
There is a 14 hour per week limit on your Internet use through the
Library's dialup lines. If your account goes over 14 hours, the server will
refuse to accept connections from your username until the end of the week.
There is no need to call the library, your account will begin working
again early Sunday (a few minutes after Saturday midnight).
If your account is disabled for this reason, you will still be able to
log in at a Library branch or on a wireless connection. You will also
be able to use Web Mail and access the Library's website from a
different Internet connection. The only service that will be unavailable
will be the dialup lines.
Please check the Library's System News at least once a week. To
get there, go to the Library home page at
