Setting up your Internet Account with Windows 98SE

You should have the following items before beginning:

  1. A computer with Windows 98SE or later, in good working order.
  2. A modem, connected to a working telephone jack, properly installed in your system and configured in Windows.
  3. The paperwork that was supplied when you signed up with the Library, including your username and password.
  4. You may require your Windows CD-ROM. (if your system shipped with one)

The screen shots below were prepared from a computer which was wiped clean and freshly loaded with a copy of Windows 98 Second Edition. Your screens may vary somewhat due to different versions of Windows, additional software appearing in your menus, etc.

Step I

  1. Click Start
  2. Click Programs
  3. Click Accessories
  4. Click Internet Tools
  5. Click Internet Connection Wizard
Step II

  1. Click the third option, "I want to setup my connection manually.....".
  2. Click Next >
Step III

  1. The first option, "I connect through a phone line and modem" should be checked.
  2. Click Next >

Windows may ask for your Windows CD-ROM at this point. If your vendor did not provide a CD they may have included "CAB" files preloaded on your hard drive. If so, Windows should automatically see them and install any needed files but in some cases it may need help. You can try clicking "Browse" and pointing it to C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS  and hoping for the best. In case of problems here, contact the vendor of your PC and inquire how best to proceed. It should be noted that every PC should be supplied with these files, on the hard drive, on a recovery CD or on a full copy of Windows. If your vendor failed to supply these files we cannot provide them due to copyright. If you suspect that your vendor failed to provide a complete copy of Windows (especially if you failed to recieve a Certificate of Authenticity, either attached to the case or on a card/manual) you may wish to call the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Hotline at 1-800-RULEGIT.

Step IV

  1. Enter the Library's Phone number
    • DeRidder and most of the parish: 462-9420
    • Longville/Ragley: 725-3768 or 725-4484
  2. Uncheck the box labeled "Dial using the area code and country code".
  3. Click Next >

If there is more than one phone number listed for your area, pick one at random. You can add a seperate dialup networking icon for the other number later.

Step V

  1. Enter the 5-8 character username you selected when you filled out the form at the library into the "User name:" box
  2. Enter the password we assigned you into the "Password:" box.
  3. Be sure that both the username and password are entered correctly, including capitalization.
  4. Click Next >
Step VI

  1. Name the connection. If you have more than one (DeRidder and Longville) you might want to number them. (This document only includes one, adding the second requires you to go to My Computer, Dialup Networking and pick "New Connection")
  2. Click Next >
Step VII

  1. Make sure NO is checked here. Checking YES will begin the setup for Outlook Express which WE REQUEST THAT YOU DO NOT USE ON OUR SYSTEM AND WE PROVIDE NO SUPPORT FOR.

Most of the viruses in the last three years have depended on Outlook Express to propagate and we lack the support resources to deal with the mess. You will be setting up e-mail through Netscape 6 later on during the install.

  2. Click Next >
Step VIII

  1. Uncheck the box labeled "To connect to the Internet immediately....".
  2. Click Finish
  3. Congratulations, your Internet Connection is now setup.

If you checked out a copy of our CD-ROM, insert it now and proceed to the seperate set of step by step instructions for it.
