This week we received some intriguing new non-fiction books that might interest readers.
Freedom: My Book of Firsts by Jaycee Dugard. The author was abducted when she was eleven years old and held captive for more than eighteen years. Her previous book, A Stolen Life, tells the story of that captivity. This follow-up book tells about what happened after her rescue. She shares the difficulties and triumphs of adjusting to her new life. Because she was a child when she was kidnapped and essentially grew up as a prisoner, she missed out on the experiences that most of us take for granted. She tells about things like driving a car for the first time and learning to shop for groceries. She also shares the challenges of reconnecting with her family and developing friendships. She shows that even after horrible tragedy there can be happiness and recovery.
Cyberspies: The Secret History of Surveillance, Hacking, and Digital Espionage by Gordon Corera. Beginning with the birth of the internet, the author reveals how the intertwined forces of computers and espionage are reshaping the entire world. He uses his unique access to the NSA and other worldwide agencies to share previously untold and highly classified information about spying and hacking carried out by the U.S., U.K., China, and even global technology companies. He shows that all of this began decades ago when spies secretly developed computers for code breaking, but quickly discovered the expanded potential for them. Computers allowed huge amounts of sensitive information to be shared, but could also be exploited in order for enemies to gain access to damaging secrets. See how all of this technology is affecting the world.
