Mango Monday: Greek

For this week's Mango Monday we will present Greek.

Modern Greek has approximately 12 million speakers in Greece and Cyprus. It is a language with a long and rich history, and Mango offers lessons in ancient and Koine (Biblical) Greek in addition to modern Greek. According to Mango:

Only one language can claim to be the western world's oldest documented spoken language—and that language is Greek. The Greek language plays an incredibly important role in history, and to a variety of other languages, including English. Words like 'magic', 'technology', 'geography', and 'enthusiasm' are all Greek words!

If you wanted to see a vibrant part of the world or become more confident ordering in a Greek restaurant, this would be the language for you. Greek is in the Indo-European language family, just like English is, and the Greek-derived loan words in the example above only scratch the surface. The distinctive Greek alphabet has only 24 letters, but the sounds are consistent once you learn what the characters represent. Greek also does some things that are different than English but that will be familiar to people who have already tried learning other European languages. Greek has a formal 2nd person pronoun, and it uses grammatical genders. If those things seem intimidating at first, don't worry. Mango has color grammar on screen and lots of notes to help you speak with ease.

All conversational languages give you different language skills and situations to practice (Making Friends, Shopping, etc). Here is the first lesson about you can learn from .

  • Good morning. Do you have maps, please? Καλημέρα. Έχετε χάρτες, παρακαλώ;
  • Sure! Come this way. Βεβαιως! Ελάτε από δω.
  • How much is the map of Athens? Πόσο κάνει ο χάρτης της Αθήνας;
  • One euro and fifty cents. Ένα ευρώ και πενήντα λεπτά.
  • Ok. I'd like two. Εντάξει. Θα ήθελα δύο.
  • Three euros, please. Τρεις ευρώ, παρακαλώ.
  • Here are your maps! Ορίστε οι χάρτες σας!
  • Thanks a lot. Goodbye! Ευχαριστώ πολύ. Αντίο σας!

    Greek is available through both Mango Languages and Pronunciator. Each language product has different interfaces, and some will work better for you depending on what you want to get out of your language experience. Don't forget to take advantage of each product's mobile apps for language learning on the go!

    Next Monday we will be back with a new language you can teach yourself with resources from your library.
