Stealing Mona Lisa by Carson Morton

The mystery genre doesn’t interest everyone, but I encourage you to give this book a try before writing it off. The author gives readers a little of everything in the story. Historical fiction, murder, romance, and mystery are all rolled into one page turner of a book. Set in the early 20th century, the book is based on the actual theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911. The plot is entertaining and at times unexpected, I found myself forgetting that this was a fictional tale.

Eduardo de Valfierno is a criminal who makes a good living in Argentina selling forgeries of famous pieces of art to unsuspecting collectors. The buyers believe that Valfierno and his crew of thieves are stealing the famous portraits from museums, when in reality they are selling the buyers fakes. When Valfierno is forced to move back to Paris, where he got his start, he pulls together an unlikely group of criminals to take on the biggest challenge yet, stealing the Mona Lisa.

This book won Library Journal’s Best Mystery of 2011 award.

If Stealing Mona Lisa interests you, feel free to request and check it out. We'll be back next Wednesday with a different Staff Pick.
