The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by Daniel James Brown

The Boys in the Boat is a compelling and historic story about the University of Washington rowing team that won gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. If you were inspired by stories like The Blind Side, Seabiscuit, and Miracle, this book is for you! One great thing about this book is that you don’t have to have any knowledge of rowing before you start, you learn as you read. The heroes of the story face hardships both in and out of the boat, and as a reader you cheer for them the whole way! They struggle through the early years of the Great Depression, get summer jobs doing backbreaking work on the Grand Coulee dam, and if that isn’t enough even when they finally qualify for the Olympics they still have to raise the money to pay their own way.

The 1936 Berlin Olympics were held just a few years before the start of World War II and planned by the Nazi Regime. As an interesting addition to the book Brown gives readers insight into the planning that took place to convince participating nations and athletes of a peaceful, tolerant Germany. This book is available in audio, physical, and e-book formats at BPL, give it a try!

If this book interests you, feel free to request and check it out. We'll be back next Wednesday with a different Staff Pick.
