Need something to keep the kids occupied during the holiday break? Come to the library and pick up some new Junior Fiction books! The library is open Monday the 29th and Tuesday the 30th before closing again for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Junior Fiction Books: The Junior Fiction books at BPL DeRidder are located in the Teen Center. Just like the Adult Fiction books the Junior Fiction are divided into two categories: paperback and hardcover. The first three letters of the call number will tell you whether the book is a JF (Junior fiction- hardcover) or a JPB (Junior paperback).
So now you know how to decipher the first grouping of letters in a call number, but what about the second and the third groupings? Good news, the method used for the Adult Fiction books is the same for the Junior Fiction books! The other groupings will also have three letters each. The second grouping is the first three letters of the authors last name, and the third grouping is generally the first three letters of the title.
For example: You search the title Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in the catalog and you are only looking for the physical book version. You would look for this call number (if you wanted to find it at the DeRidder branch) DeRidder- JF ROW HAR. From this call number we know the book is a hardcover Junior Fiction book and that the author’s last name starts with ROW (Rowling).
