With Staff Picks, we would like to offer recommendations from our staff to you. These picks will be from a variety of reading, listening or viewing tastes. You might find stuff you've checked out before, or you might be intrigued enough to find a new favorite.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty

'Tis the season for all things macabre. This week's staff pick is Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by Caitlin Doughty, mortician, columnist, and proponent of the Good Death Movement. Smoke Gets In Your Eyes is a darkly humorous, sometimes irreverent, look at the realities of after death care.

Ms.Doughty recollects her training as a crematory operator and the individuals (alive and deceased) she met in her work. In a particularly poignant passage, she recounts the experience of assisting a family with a witness cremation (where the family remains for the entirety of the process). She discusses her own shortfalls and missteps while deftly describing the alternative ways loved ones' final wishes can be met.

Though Doughty often uses humor to make what some deem an uncomfortable subject more approachable, it is her thoughtful consideration of the role of after-death service providers and the varying needs of individuals that make this an excellent read.

If this book interests you, feel free to request and check it out. We'll be back next Wednesday with a different Staff Pick.
