Find It Fridays

As promised last week this Find It Friday has tips and tricks for searching MEDLINE. MEDLINE is a scholarly medical database offered by BPL that could provide patrons like you with the latest scholarly medical and pharmaceutical information; MEDLINE is perfect for nursing students, medical professionals, or interested patrons. To access MEDLINE CLICK HERE.

It is important to note that MEDLINE will not be the easiest, or best database to use if you just want to do a quick search for a disease or medical condition. In the following weeks we will walk through some online databases that offer more basic platforms!

The best way to start is by choosing the Advanced Search option. While it may take more time to set up an Advanced Search, it will help you receive more accurate search results in the end. There are so many ways to use the Advanced Search, but the best way to start is at the top and work your way down. There are plenty of boxes to check to filter your search, you may use one or fifteen depending on how in depth you want the results to be.

First Step: Enter a keyword for your first concept in the search box at the top of the screen. Use the drop down menus to the right of the search box to select what type of search you entered. As you will see there are many options in the drop down including Title, Subjects, Author, Date of Publication, Exact Subject Heading, and Issue.

Second Step: Work your way down to the search options. You can choose the “linked full text” option which means that all of your results will have the full text available for you to read. Or, if you are a nurse or medical professional looking for Evidence Based Medicine Reviewed articles you can check that box. Take the time to read through all the filtering options and keep them in mind for the future!

Next week we will walk through the process of using MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) in MEDLINE to receive the most accurate results.
