This week's Find it Friday will give you a look into the online medical resources that BPL provides. BPL offers access to a wide variety of medical databases that can all be very beneficial when searching for the latest health information. Also, some of these are scholarly databases, filled with reports and studies that can help you with your next school assignment.
To start your search, click on the Louisiana Library Databases tab on the lefthand side of this homepage. From there, select the Health & Medicine tab and open the database of your choice. There are too many great databases to cover in this one segment, so here are two options to get started with! These two databases contain scholarly information that can be used for reports, classes, or just for your own interest.
CINAHL – CINAHL is a valuable database for any of our patrons who may be studying nursing or want to enter the medical field. This database provides full text from over 700 nursing and allied health journals, all which may come in handy when you need to find scholarly sources. The search platform is through EBSCO Host, which we will cover in-depth later in the month (For a quick overview of searching click on this link). Just like many of our other resources you can access CINAHL both in the library or from the comfort of your own home.
MEDLINE – MEDLINE is an extensive database that provides scholarly information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, and the health care system. This database is managed by the National Library of Medicine and patrons should use controlled subject headings for the best search results. Stay tuned next week when we discuss some tips and tricks for successfully searching MEDLINE. Until then, browse around these two databases and see what interesting information you can find!
