The library’s Summer Reading Programs will be starting soon and we have been working hard to add new books to our collection for readers of all ages. Check out these new additions:
For young children who enjoy having stories read to them, we have Ruthie and the (Not So) Busy Day by Laura Rankin. In this cute story, Ruthie has big plans for a special Saturday at home with her parents. However, her parents have so much to do that there will not be time for the activities Ruthie had planned. Will she still be able to enjoy the day, even if it does not turn out the way she wanted?
For beginning independent readers, check out The Berenstain Bears Gone Fishin’ by Mike Berenstain. Papa Bear has a fancy fishing rod and he is sure he can teach Brother, Sister and Honey Bear a thing or two about catching big fish. Eventually Papa Bear realizes that the fanciest gear isn’t always the best. This is an “I Can Read!” Level 1 book, and is designed for children who are just learning to read on their own.
For those young readers who enjoy chapter books, there is the latest in the popular Hank the Cowdog series, The Return of the Charlie Monsters by John R. Erickson. Someone is out to get Hank. First there is a turkey debacle, then he is poisoned, then nearly killed on a disastrous ride to town. Who could be doing these terrible things – and why? Find out in this hilarious mystery story.
For older children, try A Hidden Enemy by Erin Hunter. This is the second book in the Survivors series by this popular author. In this volume, Bella and the Leashed Dogs have settled in the forest. But a fierce pack of Wild Dogs has laid claim to their land and will stop at nothing to have it all to themselves. Bella has a plan to save their home, but it involves the help of Lucky, a Lone Dog. Lucky agrees to help, but he will be tested and his true loyalties will be determined.
For adults (yes, we have a great Summer Reading Program for adults, too!) check out the latest from bestselling author Nora Roberts, The Collector. Professional house-sitter Lila Emerson leads a carefree life, not tied down by anything. She appreciates the homes and possessions of her employers, but has no desire to worry about possessions of her own. But her life is changed when she witnesses a possible murder-suicide. Artist Ashton Archer knows that his brother could never have killed his girlfriend and then himself. He enlists Lila’s help in solving the crime.
The Summer Reading Programs kick off on Saturday, May 31, with a special celebration at the DeRidder branch. Online registration for the programs will begin that day, and participants can register in person at our branches beginning Monday, June 2. Be sure to register, read, and receive great prizes!
