Digital Library: Mango Languages

In the Digital Library series we will explore the different electronic resources the library provides Beauregard Parish patrons. To use these, you will need a computer or mobile device with internet connection and your library card. For certain services, you will also need to use your electronic services password.

Mango Languages

What it is:

We are proud to share Mango Languages with language learners who want a solid start to their language learning. Mango makes everything fun and easy.

Each of the courses is presented with an appreciation for cultural nuance and real-world application that goes beyond teaching vocabulary to integrate components of grammar and culture. The Mango learning methodology teaches actual conversation, breaking down complex linguistic elements within an audio-visual framework that draws important connections and builds on information the user has already learned.

At present, Mango has over 50 modern languages for language learners as well as 17 versions of English as a Second Language. Mango continues to expand its language learning offerings, adding more languages and more platforms (including iPhone and Android apps) so that more library patrons can benefit.

How to use it:

  • Click the link at left in the digital library or click here: Mango Languages, and log in with your library card number.
  • Select your languages from the list of courses. Mango divides them as Foreign Courses for English speakers and English as a Second Language courses.
  • To work properly, your computer's java and flash need to be up to date. You will also need speakers to hear the audio.
  • Mango teaches grammar with colors so you will know which words in your target language match the words or phrases in English.
  • You do not have to know how to read your target language because a phonetic transliteration is presented along with the original text for each new word or phrase.

Pro Tips:

  • You do not have to create a profile to use Mango, but having noe makes it easier to keep track of the language(s) you study. You are able to click in your list of language(s) and go back to last completed lesson.
  • Mango Languages has a free mobile app for both iPhone and Android that allow you to take your lessons on the go! This is especially helpful for any last minute reviews while on vacation.
  • For the modern languages, the focus with most of the lessons is having a well-rounded tourist experience. It is a good foundation for other language learning.

Extra Fun:

  • Mango has classes in Pirate, Biblical Hebrew and Koine Greek.
  • For those who want to study the classics, Latin and Ancient Greek are also available.
